1. Ask to see a full wedding gallery — not just highlights

Every photographer has a stunning highlight reel. That's not what you want to see.

Ask for a complete gallery from a single wedding — all 400 or 600 images. This tells you everything: how they handle boring in-between moments, whether the quality stays consistent across an entire day, how they photograph people who aren't naturally photogenic, and whether the images hold up outside of golden hour.

A highlights reel is a best-of. A full gallery is the truth.

2. Ask what happens if your photographer falls sick on your wedding day

This is the question almost nobody asks, and it is one of the most important ones.

Weddings don't reschedule. If your photographer has a family emergency, gets Covid, or is in an accident the morning of your wedding — what happens? Do they have a backup photographer they trust? Is that person at the same level? Do you get to meet them beforehand?

Any established studio should have a clear, honest answer to this. If they hesitate or get vague, pay attention to that.

3. Ask how they handle families during formals

Group family portraits are the part of a wedding day that can quietly unravel if not managed well. You have three generations, varying levels of patience, aunts who wander, and a grandfather who doesn't want to be in the photo.

Ask your photographer: how do you organise family formals? Do you work from a shot list? How long do you set aside for them?

A photographer who has done this hundreds of times has a system. That system is what stands between you and two hours of chaos.

4. Ask what time they arrive — and what they do when they get there

The getting-ready hours are some of the most emotionally rich moments of a wedding day. The quiet ones. The ones you'll want documented.

Some photographers arrive just before the ceremony begins. Others arrive when you're still in your dressing gown, drinking chai, and laughing with your bridesmaids. The difference in what gets captured is enormous.

Ask specifically: what time do you plan to arrive, and what are you looking to photograph in those first hours?

5. Ask about the editing timeline — and what's included

This is where a lot of couples get a surprise they weren't expecting.

How many images will you receive? When will you receive them? Are prints included? Is an album? What does the editing style look like — is it consistent, or does it shift based on whoever edited that week?

Ask to see images specifically from reception or evening ceremonies. Ask what equipment they use in low light. You don't need to understand the technical answer — you just need to see whether the images actually look good.

7. Ask how they'd describe their style — in one sentence

This is less about the answer and more about how they answer.

A photographer who knows their work intimately should be able to tell you, quickly and clearly, what makes their images theirs. If the answer is vague, generic, or sounds like it was copy-pasted from a website — it might be.
