Why We Always Recommend a Pre-Wedding Shoot — Even If You Think You Don't Need One

When we suggest a pre-wedding shoot to couples, we get one of two reactions. Either immediate enthusiasm — "yes, we've been wanting to do one" — or a version of "do we really need it? It feels like an extra expense."

This blog is for the second group. Because we genuinely believe a pre-wedding shoot is one of the most useful things you can do before your wedding day — and not for the reasons most photographers will tell you.

The obvious reason — and why it's not the main one

Most photographers will tell you a pre-wedding shoot gives you beautiful images for your wedding invitations, your Instagram, your save-the-dates. This is true. But it's not the most important reason to do one.

The most important reason is this: your wedding day is the worst possible time to meet your photographer for the first time.

Your wedding day is high stakes, high emotion, and high pressure

On your wedding day, you will be in one of the most emotionally heightened states of your life. You will be surrounded by family, by expectations, by a schedule that never quite runs on time. You will be wearing an outfit that weighs more than your regular clothes. You will be navigating rituals and relatives and a hundred small things simultaneously.

And in the middle of all of this, a photographer will point a camera at you and ask you to be natural.

If you've never worked with this person before — never been in front of their camera, never experienced how they direct, never had the chance to relax around them — that moment will be harder than it needs to be.

What a pre-wedding shoot actually does

It breaks the ice. Properly.

After a pre-wedding shoot, you know how your photographer works. You know their energy on a shoot — how they communicate, how they direct, how much space they give you. You know what it feels like to be in front of their camera.

And they know you. They know which side you prefer. They know what makes you laugh naturally. They know whether you need more direction or more space. They know the dynamic between you as a couple.

On your wedding day, all of that knowledge translates directly into better images — because neither of you is figuring it out for the first time.

The comfort factor

Here is something we've observed across hundreds of weddings: couples who did a pre-wedding shoot with us look more relaxed in their wedding photographs.

Not marginally. Noticeably.

The ease that comes from having been through it once already — from knowing the photographer, trusting them, having already had the experience of forgetting the camera was there — shows in every frame.

It's also just a beautiful experience in itself

Separate from all the practical benefits: a pre-wedding shoot is one of the few moments in your engagement where you get to slow down, be together, and do something that is entirely about the two of you.

No vendors to meet. No guest list to debate. No seating arrangements. Just you, your partner, a beautiful location, and a few hours that are completely yours.

Couples consistently tell us their pre-wedding shoot was one of their favourite memories from the whole wedding process. Not because of the images — though they love those too — but because of the experience itself.

What a good pre-wedding shoot looks like

It should feel like a relaxed outing, not a photoshoot. The best pre-wedding sessions are the ones where, an hour in, you've genuinely forgotten you're being photographed.

A good photographer will suggest locations that suit your personality and aesthetic — not just wherever is currently popular on Instagram. They'll build time into the session for you to settle in, to get comfortable, to stop performing and start just being.

They'll also use the session to experiment — to find the angles, the light, the moments that work specifically for you. All of that informs how they photograph you on your wedding day.

If you're on the fence

We'd say: do it. Not for the photographs — though you'll love those. Do it for the experience of working with your photographer before the most important day of your life.

The couples who skip the pre-wedding shoot almost always wish they hadn't. The ones who do it almost never regret it.
