How to Choose a Wedding Photography Package — Without Getting Confused by the Options

Wedding photography packages are confusing by design. Not because photographers are trying to trick you — but because no two weddings are the same, and packages are an attempt to accommodate that. The result is a menu of options that can feel overwhelming when you're already making a hundred other decisions.
Here's how to cut through it.
Start with hours, not add-ons
The most important variable in any wedding photography package is coverage hours — how many hours your photographer will be present on your wedding day.
Everything else — album
s, prints, second shooters, drone shots — is secondary to this. Because a photographer who leaves before your reception ends, or arrives after your getting ready is done, has missed irreplaceable moments regardless of how beautiful their album design is.
Before you look at anything else, ask: how many hours does this package cover, and does that match my wedding day?
A typical Indian wedding day — from getting ready to end of reception — runs twelve to fourteen hours. Make sure your package covers it.
Understand what a second photographer actually means
Most packages at a certain price point include a second photographer. This sounds like a bonus — two photographers, twice the coverage. And it is valuable. But ask the right follow-up question: who is the second photographer?
In some studios, the second shooter is a senior photographer with years of experience. In others, it's an assistant learning the craft. The difference in what they capture is significant.
Ask to see work specifically from the second photographer you'd be getting. Not just the lead photographer's portfolio.
Albums — beautiful but not urgent
Wedding albums are meaningful and worth having. But they don't need to be decided at the time of booking.
Many studios include albums in their packages as a way of increasing the package price. If an album is important to you, ask to see samples of their actual print quality and binding — not just digital mockups. If it's not a priority right now, ask if the package can be adjusted.
Don't pay for an album you don't want just because it's bundled in.
Digital files — make sure you get them
This seems obvious, but confirm it explicitly: will you receive the high-resolution digital files of all your edited images?
Some packages include digital files. Some charge additionally for them. Some studios retain the files and only deliver prints or albums. Understand exactly what format your images will be delivered in and whether you have full rights to print and share them.
The advance payment — what's normal
A standard advance payment for wedding photography in India is between twenty-five and fifty percent of the total package cost at the time of booking, with the balance due before or on the wedding day.
Be cautious of studios that ask for the full amount upfront. Be equally cautious of those who ask for a very small advance — it can be a sign that they're overbooked and not particularly committed to holding your date.
The question that matters most
After you've understood the hours, the deliverables, the advance, and the contract — ask yourself one more question:
Do I trust this photographer to be present on one of the most important days of my life?
Packages can be negotiated. Hours can be extended. Albums can be added later. But trust — the feeling that the person behind the camera genuinely understands what this day means to you — cannot be manufactured.
That feeling, more than any line item in a package, is what you're actually paying for.
